“Listening and Making Sound”

With an ear toward political engagement, “Listening and Making Sound” is a departure from the Poor Farm’s tradition programing built on focused solo projects. The artists invited to the Poor Farm this year have, by necessity or choice, worked in the spaces between artist and activist. They have been nurtured within and by communities: the San Francisco lesbian community of the early nineties, punk and riot grrrl in Olympia, Jacmel, Haiti’s artists and poets, Act Up in NYC in the 1980’s. Before thinking in terms of a detached audience or critical judgment, these artists were performing in basements, attending consciousness-raising meetings, and listening to poetry readings in dance clubs. (The refashioning of the self in listening.) This urgent thematic group exhibition is guest curated by artists Molly Zuckerman Hartung and Nicholas Frank, and will include work by госкино, Tracy + the Plastics, Cary Cronenwett, Cauleen Smith, Gregg Bordowitz, Amy Yao, Joshua Ploeg, Kirsten Stoltmann, Poncili Creación, Microlights, Dana DeGiulio, Bryan O’Keefe, and Danny Giles. This exhibition will be accompanied by an artist publication.

Two Steve Wetzel Screening in New York

UnionDocs Center for Contemporary Documentary Art, Jan 31, 7:30 pm

Steve Wetzel will be exhibiting several videos never seen in New York. In fact this group of works has never been seen much outside the Midwest. Each is inspired in its own way by observational documentary, ethnographic film and video, and the rich and hugely diverse body of experimental time-based art. In addition Steve will read a few passages from two of his short collections of writings published by the Green Gallery Press (Occasional Performances and Wayward Writings, 2010, and[Pause], 2014). The forms and subjects addressed in the writings range from essays and lectures on love, public space and mentorship, to email correspondences and interviews about teaching and art practice. Both texts will be available for purchase at the screening.

Steve Wetzel will be joined by Pacho Velez for a conversation following the screening.

. . . . . . . . . .

Anthology Film Archives (NYC Flaherty, Americana), Feb 3, 7 p.m.

Kevin T. Allen, Jean-François Caissy and Steve Wetzel will be present for a post-screening discussion.

Mobility. Eccentricity. Entrepreneurship. This program delivers a delightfully haphazard portrait of the United States as viewed through quintessential artifacts: Kevin T. Allen takes us on a tour of repurposed ghost towns; Jean-François Caissy turns his camera on the audience at a demolition derby; and Steve Wetzel captures the beautifully cracked inventions of a midwestern man trying to turn his house into the future. Tying it all together, the American Road: Jørgen Leth’s motion picture postcards from his journey across America.

Another installment in a new sequence of The Secret Choreographer’s activities, the 3-and-a-half minute video Atopical Bandaids (After Calabrese) features a dance designed for its backdrop, the Kristin Calabrese painting Art as Bandaid2011. Collaborator Nicholas Frank’s sculptural setting for the video is designed specifically to fit the confines of the head-sized John Riepenhoff Experience. The Secret Choreographer responds to Calabrese’s rendering of hidden wounds and compounded healing, while Frank offers edges and refractions to multiply and complexify the physical and emotional equation.

Close Encounters the 4th annual Dallas Art Fair
by Linda Yablonsky

We are pleased to participate in the launch of, the official website of artist and writer David Robbins. Known for pioneering hybrids of art and entertainment in such seminal works as Talent (1986) and The Ice Cream Social (1993 - 2008) as well as his influential books The Velvet Grind (2006), Concrete Comedy (2011), and High Entertainment (2009), Robbins' widely varied production--artworks, comic objects, comedies, entertainments, writing, television--overruns categories and eludes institutional programming. "I've sought to re-wire entertainment to include material culture, which traditionally had been the domain of the art context, and also to expand our idea of comedy. That's what I've been up to for the past twenty-five years!"  The new website represents our first opportunity to consider the full range of an independent imagination who has created a singular cultural location.
