We are pleased to participate in the launch of www.davidrobbinsartist.com, the official website of artist and writer David Robbins. Known for pioneering hybrids of art and entertainment in such seminal works as Talent (1986) and The Ice Cream Social (1993 - 2008)as well as his influential books The Velvet Grind (2006), Concrete Comedy (2011), and High Entertainment (2009), Robbins' widely varied production--artworks, comic objects, comedies, entertainments, writing, television--overruns categories and eludes institutional programming. "I've sought to re-wire entertainment to include material culture, which traditionally had been the domain of the art context, and also to expand our idea of comedy. That's what I've been up to for the past twenty-five years!" The new website represents our first opportunity to consider the full range of an independent imagination who has created a singular cultural location.
The Secret Choreographer: Atopical Bandaids (After Calabrese)
John Riepenhoff Experience
Pepin Moore, Los Angeles
7 July – 11 August 2012
Another installment in a new sequence of The Secret Choreographer’s activities, the 3-and-a-half minute video Atopical Bandaids (After Calabrese) features a dance designed for its backdrop, the Kristin Calabrese painting Art as Bandaid, 2011. Collaborator Nicholas Frank’s sculptural setting for the video is designed specifically to fit the confines of the head-sized John Riepenhoff Experience. The Secret Choreographer responds to Calabrese’s rendering of hidden wounds and compounded healing, while Frank offers edges and refractions to multiply and complexify the physical and emotional equation.
