Lovable Like Orphaned Kitties and Bastard Children

curated by Kristin Calabrese and Joshua Aster

May 9 – June 14, 2009

Images Press Release Back

“A show unlike any other. Carefully selected from the fertile plains of Los Angeles based painters and brought by plane on a direct flight to the Milwaukee of our dreams. To a forum unlike any other that is The Green Gallery East. All that we desired was each painting to be no larger than ELEVEN inches in either direction. What a dream transport. The treasures received evinced a zeal for this transcontinental project. Wires crossed and envelopes opened, paintings arrived and greetings were made. Faces that shown brightly, seemed to beam brighter. For the sprightly wind that has carried this project into fruition will make its landing on May 9th 2009 at The Green Gallery East.” - Joshua Aster and Kristin Calabrese      Originally Kristin Calabrese was asked by John Riepenhoff to do a solo show in what is arguably the world's smallest gallery: the John Riepenhoff Experience. Kristin accepted and proposed that she also curate a show of small paintings to accompany "the experience." Her idea was that if the paintings were under 11 x 11 inches, an immense number could be placed in long crates and checked as normal luggage. The idea was bandied about for a year-and-a-half until eventually the project became irresistible due to the addition of a co-curator, Kristin's boyfriend, Joshua Aster. The result is that Kristin will forgo making "the experience" and instead fly with Josh to Milwaukee in early May with four 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 36" crates filled with paintings. And in addition to curating and transporting this show Kristin will create an intimate, collaborative, outdoor, concrete sculpture with Josh.     From May 9th until June 14th 2009 Milwaukee will be given the opportunity to survey LA's contemporary art scene - most of whom it has never seen. The artists will differ in their aesthetics, their styles and techniques, as well as, their stages of development and exposure.  Of the seventy-eight painters arriving in the crates the majority live in Los Angeles, four live in New York, and one lives in Phoenix. The opening reception will be at The Green Gallery East on Milwaukee's Eastside on May 9th from 4 until 9 PM.
