The Green Gallery is pleased to present Katy Cowan and Michelle Grabner at the June Art Fair. Grabner’s gingham paintings and bronze sculpture explore themes of the domestic sphere and quotidian experience. Cowan’s drawings are informed by direct observation of diverse subjects within her environment and studio. The collective works of both artists bring a vibrant cast to the gallery’s exhibition.
Grabner's work reinterprets an established motif. Gingham, typically associated with tablecloths, clothing, and jar covers, is reconfigured in these modestly proportioned, vibrant paintings. The alteration in scale and medium effectively reframes a ubiquitous element of American culture. Similarly, Grabner's bronze sculptures cast found textiles to serve in repositioning domestic objects. Here, the grid structure's influence on our comprehension of the everyday, specifically in the form of personal effects. Grabner's utilization of the grid prompts reflection on its permeation into daily life.
In Cowan’s drawings, form becomes. Simple shapes and gestural marks are what they are, but also suggest body and space. An allusion of an elbow or shoulder may be derived from a public sculpture near her home in Berlin. The representation of blue painter’s tape points to a peripheral material in the studio. The appearance of foliage may come from the memory of a recent walk. Together, these nods point to the way the artist not only engages but meditates upon her surroundings, both in the studio and out. Cowan generously invites us into this thoughtfulness and takes us down a path of her curiosity.
