Art Basel Hong Kong

Featuring: Ryu Takeda

March 25–29, 2026

Press Release Back

Following the strong reception to his Milwaukee debut last year, The Green Gallery is astonished to bring new work by Ryu Takeda to Art Basel Hong Kong Wednesday, March 25 - Sunday, March 29, 2026.

Takeda, a Japanese interdisciplinary artist, will present paintings as well as an installation of  abstract ceramics. Both draw from Takeda’s upbringing in rural Japan where nature and craft influenced his aesthetic position. We are thrilled to have an opportunity to introduce this work to new audiences at Art Basel Hong Kong.

Takeda’s paintings take on qualities of nature, literature, and process. Additionally we find his interest in the history and trajectory of Japanese philosophy and cultural authorship taking place within this work. Takeda’s titles reference the emergence of form and its associated allusions. At various stages, the works may reference a specific subject, only to relinquish that signifier as the creative process unfolds. This subtle indexing is captured as the artist negotiates the material before him.

The artist is concerned with a dynamic relationship to nature, exploring how humanity participates in its intricate network. This concern is both literal and metaphorical, suggesting that the evolving characteristics of urban life can mirror natural dynamics expressed through different media. In this context, Takeda offers a biographical reflection, juxtaposing his upbringing in rural Japan with his present residence in Tokyo.

Comparable resonances appear in Takeda’s ceramic practice. These pieces are produced employing both traditional Japanese wood‑firing techniques and contemporary technologies. Their solidity encloses a sense of landscape, preserving moments of the natural world within their assemblage. The ceramics evoke remnants and fragments of visual narrative akin to those found in his paintings. Takeda pursues the poetics of form, investigating how it registers with the viewer and provides opportunities for pause and contemplation.

At its core, Takeda’s practice interrogates the relationship between surface and depth, between what is presented and what remains concealed. The works propose that meaning is not wholly transmitted through explicit representation; instead, it resides in the interstitial spaces where the eye lingers and the mind fills gaps. By calibrating gesture, color, and title, Takeda crafts a visual language that simultaneously discloses and withholds, prompting an active engagement that transforms the spectator into a co‑author of the artwork’s final narrative.

Through this series, Takeda continues an ongoing dialogue about perception, memory, and the poetics of the unseen. The paintings stand as disciplined yet lyrical investigations, each offering a momentary glimpse into hidden strata while leaving ample room for personal interpretation. In presenting these works at Art Basel Hong Kong, the gallery aims to contribute a nuanced perspective on how contemporary painting can navigate the delicate balance between revelation and mystery, inviting audiences to pause, contemplate, and ultimately discover the secrets that lie just beneath the surface.

The Green Gallery’s participation in Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 marks a historic milestone for the Milwaukee art scene, reinforcing the city's growing influence on the global stage. As one of the few galleries from the American Midwest to be selected for this premier international platform, its presence underscores a commitment to bridging regional innovation with the global market. By showcasing Ryu Takeda, the gallery continues its legacy of elevating boundary-pushing contemporary art from our Milwaukee roots to the world’s most prestigious cultural centers.
