HIATUS

In the arts there is an honored tradition known as bohemian research--small groups of artists locating like minds and working together toward new models of artistic meaning, production, and distribution. The building on Center Street housed the liveliest and most advanced hive of bohemian research in Milwaukee. The young artists who worked or lived there have developed business enterprises and personal projects that connect this city to the coastal capitals and the (now global) contemporary art world. They are among the most committed producers of authentically contemporary culture this city has.

Their work was just getting started. The synergistic activities housed at Center Street coalesced via an organic, gradual process, of several years’ duration--the result of specific individuals identifying specific historical forces and acting in tandem. Such a confluence of forces is a delicate thing, and rare. An enlightened, sympathetic landlord provided a place to stage the evolution. No one should assume that so happy an accident will occur a second time. Restoring the hive will require some engineering. Absent assistance from some quarter, it will be the city’s loss.
