The Green Gallery presents Many Years （千年万年）/ Milwaukee Nights, the third iteration of an exhibition conceived by the artist Kazuyuki Takezaki (1976–2024) with COBRA, director of Tokyo's XYZ collective.
Once again, we need to recognize the power of art, especially its potential in relation to time. — Kazuyuki Takezaki
Takezaki was a painter based in Marugame, a small city on Japan's Seto Inland Sea, and a quietly central figure in Japanese contemporary art. Alongside his own work, he organized exhibitions and spaces throughout his life — among them Takefloor, a gallery he ran in his Tokyo apartment that encouraged a generation of artists to open their own spaces, and Take Ninagawa, which he co-founded. His first solo exhibition in the United States, Marugame, Milwaukee, was held at The Green Gallery in 2023. He died in June 2024.
Many Years (千年万年) began as an exhibition exploring time, based on a concept by Takezaki, and has continued through annual transformations with changing artists and spaces. The first iteration was held at VOU in Kyoto in the fall of 2024; the second in Marugame in 2025, in the building that houses Takezaki's studio. The exhibition has been carried forward by artists close to him. The third of Many Years is curated by COBRA with Mizuki Takezaki of TAKEJIROZABURO that stewards Takezaki's studio and work, and brings together artists from the earlier exhibitions alongside participants from Milwaukee. Takezaki's own work is included.
Curators' statement
Eleven artists present works as sustained meditations on time. Landscape recurs throughout the exhibition in different forms — as a constant, and as a very real, durational materiality. This reveals a deeper sense of time and history; the exhibition asks us to consider artistic production the same way.
As John Riepenhoff's sky paintings begin with carrying canvases outdoors at night in Milwaukee and painting under the dark sky, we often discover a capacity for insight and imagination in darkness — distinct from what we experience in daytime. What emerges as the surrounding landscape recedes exists in a time apart from the hurried current in which people and things move in our speed-obsessed contemporary world.
When gazing at the stars, we look at the past, and at the same time can imagine light that lies far beyond, toward future time and space. It is a point where past, present, and future mingle. This iteration of Many Years is guided by the time held within starlight.

The Green Galleryは、竹崎和征（1976–2024）が東京のXYZ collectiveディレクター・COBRAとともに構想した展覧会の3回目となる「Many Years（千年万年）/ Milwaukee Nights」を開催いたします。
今一度、私たちは作品の持つ力、特に時間に対しての可能性を感じておく必要があると思いました。 ―竹崎和征
竹崎和征は、瀬戸内海に面した香川県丸亀市を拠点に活動した画家であり、日本の現代美術において静かに中心的な役割を果たした作家です。自身の制作と並行して、生涯を通じて展覧会やスペースの企画・運営にも取り組み、東京の自宅アパートで運営したギャラリー「Takefloor」は同世代の作家たちが自らスペースを開く機運を育みました。彼はまた「Take Ninagawa」の共同設立者でもあります。2023年には、アメリカでの初個展「Marugame, Milwaukee」をThe Green Galleryにて開催。2024年6月に逝去しました。
「Many Years（千年万年）」は、竹崎和征によるコンセプトを基に時間をテーマとした展覧会として始まり、作家と空間を移しながら、年ごとに変容を重ねて継続してきました。第1回は2024年秋に京都のVOU / 棒にて、第2回は2025年に竹崎のスタジオが入る丸亀のビルにて開催されました。展覧会は、竹崎と親交のあった作家たちによって受け継がれています。3回目となる本展はCOBRA、そして竹崎のスタジオと作品を継承する竹二郎三郎の竹崎瑞季のキュレーションにより、これまでの展覧会の参加作家およびミルウォーキーの作家による作品で構成されます。竹崎自身の作品も出品されます。
ステートメント
11名のアーティストが、時間についての持続的な思索としての作品を発表します。展覧会を通して、風景が異なる様相で繰り返し現れます——不変のものとして、また、続いていく時間を内包する現実の物質として。それらは、時間と歴史についてのより深い感覚をあらわにします。本展は、芸術における制作もまたそのような時間の流れの中で捉えることを試みます。
ジョン・リーペンホフのsky paintingのシリーズが、夜の屋外にカンヴァスを持ち出し、暗闇の中で空を描くことから始まっているように、私たちはしばしば暗がりの中で、日中とは異なる洞察力や想像力を発揮することがあります。あたりの風景が姿を潜める中に浮かび上がるものは、速度に追われる現代において人々やものごとがせわしなく動く流れとは別の時間に存在します。
たとえば夜空の星を眺める時、過去をまなざすのと同時に、現在の私たちが見えている光のはるか先に存在する、未来の時空にある光を想像することもできるでしょう。それは、過去と未来、そして現在が混ざり合う地点でもあります。今回の「Many Years（千年万年）」は、こうした星の光が持つ時間を手がかりにして立ち上がります。
