Matthew Higgs"For the past twenty years I have made art using books, or parts of books as my primary material. In the past I have described my text pieces, which consist of framed title pages from existing books, as a form of “found conceptual art.” The work in the current exhibition is taken from Dennis Cooper's novel “Wrong.” The parallel series of framed book covers I think of as a form of “found abstract art.” The covers tend to be sourced from art catalogs published in the 1960s and 1970s and employ the characteristics/tropes of modernist abstraction. The recent series of “reading paintings” juxtapose small monochromatic paintings with books from my own library that I have enjoyed reading. In a straightforward way the “reading paintings” are an attempt to both present and share my enthusiasms."
